Reflected here is my “Mirror Session” photographed by Antoine Giacomoni. …I was going through my archives and found this beautiful photo of a much younger me by Antoine. Almost 18 in Rue de la roquette Paris.

The other pictures are with Dimitri Tikovoi, we both look like a couple of angels from a Cocteau film. I am hiding behind endless hair, a young woman, appearing somewhat lost in a dark forest.

It’s only recently that I realised when I was having a chat with Alan that we had both been through the mirror of Antoine Giacomoni, Alan was photographed by Antoine in London at the time of Depeche…and here is his photo view

Thank you Antoine and many thanks to Marie Tikova. Marie would drive me in her old Triumph from Charenton to La Bastille for cups of tea, music, talks at Antoine’s. It was the beginning of a new era for me. I was trying, and I had not yet found what I was searching for.

“Antoine Giacomoni is a French photographer. For the past 30 years he has taken photographs through a mirror. He calls his way “mirror sessions” like a musician: he started with rock stars. Nico was the first and then Antoine made the portraits of Lou Reed, John Lydon, Depeche Mode and many others. “At that time, when Antoine was introduced to Nico by some friends…
As is understandable, Giacomoni wanted to photograph her but, initially, Nico did not want to see either a photographer or a camera. Nevertheless, they became soul friends and after a period of time, Antoine eventually convinced her to have her portrait taken through her reflection in a purposely built mirror surrounded by lights. That way she would not be conscious of the camera and the photographer.
This was the birth of Antoine’s Mirror Images. On seeing the session images, Nico’s reaction was appreciative and the resurfacing of her portraits in the music world caused a ripple that lives on to this day.
